Top 5 Packaging Basics

Small businesses that produce and sell an original product often neglect to think of how it will be packaged until the very last moment. This can result in poorly designed packaging that is unfit for purpose. To create good packaging:

Develop well: Try to consider how the product will be packaged as early in the design process as possible. It helps to make sketches and also to look at what your competitors are doing. Try to make physical mock-ups of the potential packaging in conjunction with any prototypes that are produced.

Keep it simple: There is no benefit whatsoever in making packaging overcomplicated. All this will achieve is to push the manufacturing cost up and really annoy your customers as they try to unwrap it. Whenever possible, use standard packaging instead of custom-made shapes because this will be far cheaper.

Display your brand: Remember that whatever you package your product in is a unique opportunity for branding. If you plan on mass marketing your product it will need to stand out on the shelves in order to be noticed.

Educate potential customers: Try to include a lot of information about the product on the actual packaging. If you are not around in person to sell your product at a retail outlet, often it will be the product details on the packaging that is a deciding factor in the purchase decision.

Be mindful of constraints: Your packaging should not break any laws for whatever reason. Also, try to make your packaging as environmentally friendly as possible, not just because you are required by law to meet certain standards, but because your small business should be seen to be green.
