WinWeb Pitch of the Week – Uni Baggage

This week our Pitch of the Week winner is Paul Stewart, founder of Uni Baggage; a low cost courier booking service for students. We spoke to Paul about his vision for Uni Baggage, and how he first set up in business.

“When I became a student I suddenly became aware of many problems faced by students; the majority of which come from effectively living in two different places throughout the year. It was this that sparked my initial business idea to set up a storage company to cater for students who needed somewhere to store their university belongings over the summer months.

In November 2009 I saw another gap in the market, and Uni Baggage was born. I came up with the concept for Uni Baggage as I struggled with finding a fast and cost effective way to transport my belongings to and from university.

Uni Baggage takes the hassle out of transporting students’ belonging; and has an unrivalled service in terms of cost, speed and customer service. Through negotiating unique contracts with courier firms, such as Parcel Force, we are able to offer unbeatable prices for transporting belongings via Uni Baggage. In fact, if students were to go directly to Parcel Force they would end up paying nearly four times as much as if they came to Uni Baggage.

Getting Uni Baggage up and running hasn’t always been plain sailing; We were due to launch the full Uni Baggage online booking service in time for Christmas 2009, however technical problems meant this didn’t happen and due to the seasonal nature of Uni Baggage this ended up costing a quarter of the annual turnover.

When setting up a small business determination and commitment despite drawbacks is fundamental. Despite a few minor hiccups Uni Baggage has been a great success, serving thousands of students in the first few months of business.

I see the business growing dramatically over the next few years, with Uni Baggage becoming a strong brand within the student market. When students think about travelling to or from University I want Uni Baggage to pop in to their heads”.

Paul Stewart, founder of Uni Baggage, saw the potential for a business in problems he was encountering in his day-to-day life. Do you have the vision to turn a problem in to a business?
