The winner of our competition this week is Annabella Forbes, the owner of an online small business called Bed & Fed. We recently spoke to Annabella to find out more about the business and this is what she told us:
“We are a web community of home-from-home accomodation all over the UK and Ireland that people can search for free. Homeowners can sign up as a Host and pay an annual subscription fee to be listed on the website. They can also make money by becoming a Bed & Fed Hero, which involves recruiting other people to join as hosts.
Bed & Fed has been running for just over a year now. I started the business because I saw a need for friendly, affordable and relaxed home-from-home accomodation in the UK and Ireland. We fill the gap between hostel and overpriced B&B / hotel, with our hosts providing kitchen supper, bed and a simple breakfast. Our network is quite niche and there is no other similar directory.
The biggest problem we have faced so far is the high cost of advertising and trying to gain attention in the press. We also had a man in Belgium copying the ‘Bed & Fed’ name and trying to provide a similar service, so I had to apply for a European trademark to stop him.
Ultimately I want Bed & Fed to have over 1000 hosts listed all over the UK and Ireland. We want to convey to the public that the Bed & Fed concept is a slightly different and cheaper concept to the traditional B&B. Eventually I want to be able to franchise the Bed & Fed concept internationally and also launch a cookbook!”
Annabella saw the opportunity for a great online niche business and developed it into a succesful small business. Have you got a similar story that you want to share with our readers? Enter our Pitch of the Week competition for the opportunity to win £200 / $300 of free online marketing.
